EU in Sierra Leone BAFS Project Supporting the Fight against FAW

Global research shows that Fall Army Worm (FAW) is an invasive crop pest and its continuous existence poses a huge threat to food security, incomes of farmers as well as agricultural trade. There has been an initial nationwide assessment conducted by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF) with support from the Boosting Agriculture and Food Security (BAFS) Project funded by the European Union (EU) under the 11th European Development Fund (EDF).

The assessment determined the impact of FAW and suggested further interventions to manage or curtail it. The project recently handed over FAW management and surveillance materials which included motorbikes, pheromone traps, and other equipment to MAF District officials in Kenema, Bo, Kambia and Bombali Districts respectively to aid in the fight against FAW.

The BAFS Project through MAF is keen in ensuring that the EU’s support to the Agriculture Sector yields its desired objective of ensuring food security in Sierra Leone.
